Melanie Coleman was 20 years old. She was a junior nursing student from Milford. She died after slipping off the uneven bars during practice and suffering a spinal cord injury, according to school officials and a report on Monday,11 November 2019. Melanie was a level 10 gymnast, which is the highest level in the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympics Program. Alberti described her as a gymnast of “discipline” who had a “desire and love for the sport.”


Coleman graduated from Jonathan Law High School in Milford, where she was captain of the gymnastics team and named All-State. She then joined Southern Connecticut State University, where she proceeded with her gymnastics. She was a nursing major in the University and the third female sibling in her family to become a gymnast.

The student-athlete at the New Haven school had been named a Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association Scholastic All-American this year and previously made it to the top level of the USA Junior Olympics Program. Melanie Coleman received All-American Scholar-Athlete recognition from USA Gymnastics last year.


Coleman’s family contains seven individuals, the parents, Tom and Sue Coleman, who have raised five empathetic, kind, and persistent youngsters who include: Jimmy Coleman, Tiffany Coleman, and Valerie Coleman and Melanie Coleman.

Cause of Death

Coleman was training on an apparatus that she’d worked with thousands of times before when she slipped and fell.

Melanie Coleman was seriously injured in what friends of the family described as a “tragic strange accident” in practice on Friday, 8 November. He succumbed to her injuries at Yale-New Haven Hospital on Sunday, 10 November 2019.

The Southern Connecticut State University President Joe Bertolino said in a statement.“Our deepest sympathies are extended to her family and friends on this tragic loss.”

“The injury occurred after she slipped off of the bar,” Coleman’s former coach, Thomas Alberti, told the Hartford Courant. “It was an unexpected accident with a tragic result.”
